Personal opinion of the book:
The Black Lotus was such a well written book! I really loved the way that the story developed. It didn’t feel as though any part of the plot was rushed.
The way that the character’s speech was written was absolutely incredible! All posh, old world English was used. And I absolutely adored it!
The whole premise of the book was so well thought out and I was very amazed/impressed by the well thought out background story.
At first I wasn’t sure about some of the characters, they were a little sketchy… o_0

But overall, the story line was incredibly unique, the character development was great and I really enjoyed this book.

Books in the series:
  1. Black Lotus
  2. Blood Orchid
Star rating (out of 5):
I give this book a rating of 3/5 stars. I really enjoyed reading this book, but I found that that looking back on the book, not much has actually happened over the duration of the story. Overall, a really unique book that I would recommend to anyone.

Thank you so much for reading this review. I know that it is only short, but school is absolutely hectic at th moment, I really enjoyed this book and am so upset about the EVIL cliff-hanger that Claire Warner left! I am looking forward to the next book!

Until next time, keep reading!

Exclusive excerpt from the book - A Guarded Girl:
Hailey stared at the empty can on her tray, silently willing the caffeine to kick in. The last thing she needed was to fall asleep, dream of monsters, and have an “episode” in front of her 200 closest non-friends.
No way she’d let that happen.
Now if only her droopy eyelids would cooperate, because the hard plastic chair under her butt sure wasn’t. The dang thing was teasing her and feeling mighty comfy, like a puffy armchair, and she was sinking fast. Thankfully, though, just as her head bobbed, the bell rang, jolting her into a wide-eyed, full-body spasm.
Great. Real smooth, she thought, rubbing her face with both hands as a few gigglers shuffled past.
She groaned, rising with all the enthusiasm of a mushroom, not at all looking forward to another two hours inside the social torture chamber, or as everyone else referred to it, South Side High School.
She was so intent on avoiding the students there for the rest of her senior year that she rarely looked up from her books anymore, and those last two hours dragged. When three o’clock finally rolled around, she bolted outside, took the first open seat on the bus, rested her head against the window, and let it bounce there. She was just about to make it through another day of school very happily unnoticed, when Tage Adams smacked her on the back of the head.
“Ah!” she yelled, startled from sleep.
The bus was waiting at their stop, like normal, and Tage was waiting for her in the aisle, politely—not normal.
Tucking a wayward strand behind her ear, she hurried off the bus.
Tage followed.
“What’s up with you today?” he said nonchalantly, adjusting his pace to walk next to her.
He’d never done that before.
“Nothing,” Hailey said, surprised Tage was talking to her. They’d been catching the bus at the same stop for four years, and he’d never so much as looked at her.
“You’re usually not like that, that’s all.”
“Like what?”
“Nodding off in class, falling asleep on the bus…you know, slacking off. It’s just, you know, you usually have your nose in a book.”
He watches me?
“Oh,” she said, unsure.
“Guess you were working late last night…St. Paddy’s Day…”
“Yeah.” Of course she was working late. Her family owned the most popular Irish pub in Pittsburgh. Hailey pressed her lips together. Small talk was not her thing. Especially not with him.
Her mind went blank.
Searching the pavement for a thought, she chewed her lip as too many seconds stretched the silence. Finally the pressure forced her good sense aside and she opened her mouth to say…anything.
“What’s—”
“Well, see ya ‘round, Dancing Queen.”
She snapped her mouth shut and waved as he peeled off and trotted down Bridge Street. She tried to form the word, “bye,” but all that came out was “buh—”. Standing dumbfounded, she stared after him. She hadn’t realized Tage knew she existed, let alone the fact that she waitressed. And danced.
Stunned, Hailey walked, then jogged, then stopped dead to puzzle over what had just happened. Then she jogged again until she finally reached the pub.

Nobody at that school “chatted” with Hailey. Not since the fourth grade, not since the day a particularly mean girl concocted a particularly ugly rumor—that Hailey had started the fire that killed her parents. The whispers and sideways glances lasted close to a year, and in trying to defend herself, Hailey only made things worse. By the time she figured out that nobody else believed in pyromaniac-nightmare-monsters, it was too late. She’d already earned the label, “weirdo,” which, unfortunately, stuck.

Hi all! I am so excited to introduce Eliza Green! Eliza is the author of a fabulous new self-published series called Becoming Human. Becoming Human is the first book in a sci-fi book series, Exilon 5. I have posted a separate post that has my review and a give away. I will link my other post below:

It is now with great pleasure that I welcome Eliza Green!!!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Meet Eliza Green

Before I started writing, my career and education background was a little chequered. When I left school, I completed a fashion design course. Then I worked in retail for five years while switching to a marketing degree that took me five years to complete. After, I moved into an investment management company, then went travelling for six months across Canada (the best time of my life!) and wound up working in sport and completed a one year massage course during that stint. So what did I learn about myself? I’m really good at administration and organisation. Lucky me. Needless to say I was craving a career that took me out of the mundane and breathed life into my withering soul.

I started writing in 2009 after I read a popular book that had good points and bad and got me thinking about about alternative ways to write it. I penned a women’s fiction story in three weeks and loved the control I had over the story so much that I wrote more. Becoming Human started out as a singular idea yet to be fleshed out. I wrote 10k words and pitched it to my sci-fi loving boyfriend who told me to write more. In late 2012, after many agent rejections, I finally self-published my first book, Becoming Human.

The book is about humanity, hope, and survival, and follows what happens when an alien race discovered on an exoplanet threatens the peaceful relocation plans of the human population. Becoming Human explores what happens when humans come face to face with the Indigenes, the race they find living on Exilon 5. Who will reign superior?

Becoming Human follows several points of view but the main characters are Bill Taggart, an ITF investigator, Laura O’Halloran, an Earth Security Centre worker and Stephen, the main Indigene alien in the book. All of the characters have a little bit of me in them: Bill’s inability to trust new people, Laura’s unwavering optimism and Stephen’s stubbornness. Being an introvert means I’m slow to warm to new people, but once I do they become friends for life. So Bill learns to trust others, Laura discovers that not everything is as rosy as it seems and Stephen considers a different kind of future. The message I want to get across to readers is: different isn’t something to be afraid of. I certainly wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe that.

Here’s a little interview I did with Bill Taggart and Laura O’Halloran!

‘I’d like to welcome two people who have proven very difficult to pin down over the last number of months,’ I say to the camera before turning towards my guests. ‘Laura O’Halloran and Bill Taggart. Thank you for being here.’
‘Thank you, Eliza,’ Laura says with a friendly smile.
She’s sitting up straight, but I can tell the camera makes her nervous. Bill is the opposite of her. He’s leaning back casually in his chair, one ankle propped up on his knee, watching me.
I begin in earnest. ‘I know you can’t stay long, but there are some preliminary questions I need to ask. Bill, for those who don’t know you, please tell us what you do?
‘I’m a lead investigator with the International Task Force.’
‘Investigator of what?’
He folds his arms. ‘Whatever our parent company deems important.’
‘The ITF is a subsidiary of the World Government, right?’ I ask.
He nods once. His edginess makes me nervous. Laura is different. She’s making an effort to be open, even though they are in quite some danger.
‘Same question to you, Laura.’
‘I work at the Earth Security Centre,’ she says, quickly adding, ‘Another subsidiary of the World Government.’
‘Yes, the World Government controls many things on Earth,’ I add, conscious I need to move this interview along quickly. They are taking a massive risk by being here. ‘I can’t help but notice that you’re both nervous. Do you feel that they’re watching you?’
Bill shifts in his chair almost as if he’s looking for something. I think he’s going to say something, but he doesn’t. It’s actually Laura who answers me.
‘Em, we don’t know, but…’ She turns to look at Bill. At first it looks as if she’s checking with him what she can say, but it isn’t one exerting control over the other. A mutual respect exists between them. I see the way he glances at her. His hardened look softens and he nods briefly at her.
She leans forward and a chill creeps up my spine as I anticipate the worst.
‘Look, what’s going on is bigger than either Bill or I can explain, but I’ll do my best. The World Government cannot be trusted. Don’t drop your guard for a second.’ She combs her fingers through her long blonde hair. ‘The organisations we work for are simply there to do the World Government’s bidding and we’ve seen things that we’re unable to talk about. Every day our work is scrutinised. They track us by the chips in our thumbs, but we know how to mask that—’
Bill kicks her chair and she stops talking.
I turn my attention to Bill who has been far too quiet.
‘Bill, you were recently on Exilon 5 and you saw one of the Indigenes. The World Government has depicted them as a savage race that cannot be trusted. You believe they killed your wife. I’d like to hear your thoughts on them.’
Bill smiles but it looks forced. ‘Don’t believe everything the World Government spoon feeds you. It’s all propaganda crap. Let’s just say my opinion of the Indigenes has changed slightly.’
I frown at him. ‘So you’re saying you trust the Indigenes now?’
‘I didn’t say that.’
He’s closing himself off to me again and judging by the look Laura just gave him I’m not the only one feeling frustrated by him.
‘The World Government told you the Indigenes killed your wife, and you have nothing to say on the matter?’
‘No comment,’ he says firmly.
I can tell I’ve hit a nerve. Laura is anxiously wringing her hands.
‘Isla. That was your wife’s name, wasn’t it?’ I turn to Laura. ‘You found letters from Isla addressed to Bill. What did they say?’
Bill reacts first pointing his finger at me. ‘She didn’t deserve that…’ He stops mid-sentence.
‘Deserve what?’ I prompt.
He clams up again and Laura drops her gaze to the floor. It’s clear they both know quite a bit, but aren’t willing to say. This interview is going nowhere unless I do, or say, something drastic.
‘Tell me about Charles Deighton.’ I swore I wouldn’t mention him too early—I wanted to hear more about Isla—but I need to push the interview on.
Bill has calmed down a bit, but he answers me far too quickly. ‘He’s the CEO for the World Government.’
‘And have you ever had any issues with him? Laura?’
‘Eh, no. I’ve never met him,’ Laura says.
‘Bill?’
He releases an agitated breath. ‘Once or twice. Let’s just say the elite board members don’t show their faces unless something major is about to happen.’
I sense there’s more to this story but Bill won’t budge. I wonder if they’re worried someone is listening in. Or maybe it’s me they don’t trust.
‘Before we go any further, I need to say that I have no dealings with the World Government, nor am I ever likely to.’ It’s true. My writer’s bubble has protected me from all the changes going on. ‘Does that put your mind at rest?’
Bill gives me his best hard look that tells me it doesn’t. I’ve heard rumours about how controlling the World Government has become. I don’t blame him for being cautious.
‘So what now for the two of you? Knowing these secrets that you won’t share with me, will you carry on as you are?’
‘Of course. What else can we do?’ Bill says.
Laura glances at Bill, thenlooks into the camera. ‘I’m not sure who’ll see this interview, but the people of Earth shouldn’t blindly trust the people who govern them. The situation on Earth is getting worse and the changes being proposed by the government may not be good for all.’ She pauses briefly and swallows hard. ‘There’s something you should know about the Indigenes—‘
Bill grabs Laura’s arm and pulls her up as he stands. He isn’t rough with her, but it’s clear she’s said more than Bill wants me to know.
‘We have to go. I’m sorry we couldn’t give you more,’ he says sharply.

I stand up, but they disappear through the door like a pair of fugitives before I can even thank them for their time.

Personal opinion on the book:

Okay… WOW! This book was a really stimulating read and seriously got me thinking about world issues and what we can do to prevent such issues.
A few of the questions that ran through my head while I was reading this book were: If this happened what would I do? How would I act in situations like this? How do I become such a fabulous writer?
In all seriousness, the creative detail and well thought out objectives were amazing. The way Eliza described in the greatest detail how the complex technologies worked was truly amazing and must be highly commended.
I keep on coming back being completely amazed with just how much thought and planning would have gone into the creation of this book! It truly is jaw-dropping.

I have only just started to dip my toe into the world of sci-fi novels and have to say that this book is an outstanding introduction to the topic. At first I was a bit confused by all of the different POV’s – but as I continued to read I found that it was extraordinarily well thought out. All of the story lines were intertwined in some way. Through having the multiple POV’s the story was able to be described in much greater detail, and as my Ancient History teacher says – multiple primary sources put together, to form a collective secondary source, results in the best information.
As a primarily YA-focused reader, I personally feel like sometimes the cliché of a dystopian world can be overused. But in this book, the dystopian world was completely and utterly unique. The book just amazed me and was fantastic.

By the time I reached the end of the book, all the characters had won me over, resulting in me being really impressed with the detail that was put into each character’s personal story – usually in a multiple POV book there is nowhere need enough detail and personal information, in this book that was not the case.
By the end of the book I was just so amazed by the way that Eliza managed to link up each story line and all events had an important meaning.

Overall, I can into this book not really knowing what to expect and left knowing: this book redefined the term science fiction.

Becoming Human by Eliza Green, book 1 in the Exilon 5 series.

Interview with Eliza Green - author of Becoming Human:

1: How do you plan such a complex storyline?
I wish I had planned better at the start! Becoming Human was my first published book I ended up reworking everything several times. But the main story was in my head from the very beginning. With a little experience under my belt, my planning is definitely improving! It helps to keep everything in order so I like to outline my story on an excel spreadsheet. That’s before I even write the first draft. Then when the first draft is written, I rework the outline to detail the chapters a little more. I try not to be too prescriptive about sticking to the script as new characters will often emerge while others get cut because they’re not doing anything. When I’ve got a decent draft done, I add in more detail and get out the scissors to cut the deadwood.

2: In your book, the 'new Earth' had a dystopian feel to it, how was it to write this?
Quite fun, actually! I love dystopian stories but it was important for me that the story was relatable for readers and not too far into the future. I also wanted to link it to issues that are happening now—air pollution and overcrowding. The ‘new Earth’ is depressing, soulless and humans are the last living thing to face a possible extinction. Then there’s the alternative Earth, an exoplanet located thirty light years away called Exilon 5. Exilon 5 is modelled after twentieth-century Earth when air was cleaner and technology had not yet invaded our lives. But people living on the new planet are slipping back into the old trappings of society. Their habits are so ingrained in them, they don’t even realise they are the cause of the problems.

3: As you had so many different characters and wrote in so many different point of views, do you wish you could have developed some of the characters better?
Yes and no. Becoming Human is really about three people: Laura O’Halloran, Stephen (oone of the Indigenes living on Exilon 5) and Bill Taggart. Everyone else is supporting their stories in some way, be it directly or indirectly. There just wouldn’t have been enough time to explore everyone’s story in Becoming Human but that’s what shorter books supporting the series are for!
Altered Reality and Crimson Dawn, books 2 and 3 in the series develop certain characters further and introduce new characters, while book four in the series, yet to be released, turns a minor character from Becoming Human into a major one.

4: You wrote in such great detail about the technologies, what helped you with this? Or was it all pure imagination?
I had to do a lot of research! Some ideas were imagined, like the Light Box and the Buzz Guns or the termination clinics. But then you try to give them substance by backing up your ideas with cold, hard facts. What you invent doesn’t have to exist. It just has to be plausible, science-wise.

5: You finished this book on quite a cliff hanger, did you complete this book knowing you were going to write a second one?
Not early on, but when I finished writing Becoming Human, I realised I had barely scratched the surface of who the Indigenes were and what was really going on with the humans trying to occupy Exilon 5. Some called the ending a cliff hanger, but I’m satisfied that the questions raised in Becoming Human were answered by the end of the book. Inevitably, new questions arose that readers wanted answered straight away. But they were for another story!

6: A cliched question, but what gave you the idea to write this book?
That’s easy, from watching too many sci-fi movies that depict the aliens as aggressors. I wanted to turn that on its head and make my aliens walk and talk.

The idea for Becoming Human started with Chapter 4 where the boy and the alien meet at a bus stop in New London, a city on Exilon 5. Before I wrote a single word, I imagined how a human/alien conversation might go if you stripped away the gun-toting military and revengeful aliens. In Becoming Human, the boy thinks the alien is human because of his disguise. The alien is there to find out everything about the boy. What would they say to each other? What would they be most curious to ask about? Their second meeting is a poignant moment in the book because it’s a key turning point for Stephen, the main Indigene character.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Working with Eliza to get this post and her guest post ready for you all, was such an amazing experience. Not only did I get to read an amazing book, I also got to meet and work with the author of a book that I know will go far.
So, I would like to say thank you to Eliza for this amazing opportunity and also thank you to Kate Tilton for organizing for Eliza and I to work together on this project.

Until next time, keep reading!

Personal opinion on the book:
This book was fantastic, I really loved the progression of the story. With books like this, they are typically focused wholly around one character and that one character has all of the great magical powers, but this book has everyone having magic (obviously the main character is the most powerful). I found that I was a jumper of ships while I was reading this book. I really liked the character relations.
My main worries were when Ava _____ and _____ was killed... Haha, I guess if you want to find out what happened, and fill in the blanks yourself you will have to read the book!

Books in the series:

  1. Darkness Brutal
  2. Darkness Fair
  3. Darkness Savage

If you like... then try...:
If you like this book, I recommend reading The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. Both of these books are other-worldly and have some really great twists and magic in them.

Star rating (out of 5):
I give this book a star rating of 3.5/5 stars. I really liked this book, the story line was completely unique and had some great plot twists. My only dislike was how long it was, yes, the book needed to be this long to get all of it's awesome content written down. But I found that at times I wished the book was a little more compressed.

Thanks for checking out this review, this was a really great book to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, make sure to buy this amazing book and to support the author.

Personal opinion of the book:
I absolutely adored this book! It was written so well and had so many plot twists that I didn’t see coming. Before I get any further into the review, I want to warn you that the ending of this book MESSES YOU UP! I seriously loved this book so much, but oh gosh! The ending. That just physically hurt me!
The imagery for this book, as well as its setting was so well thought out and I was so very impressed. I did feel as though, by the end of the book I had major attachment issues to the characters and the way that the, Aspen, the female lead’s, personality was written really made me want to jump up and go exploring. Aspen was a kick-ass daredevil who wasn’t a ditsy damsel in distress, and I really liked that.
The character Obsidian/Sid was very different to how I imagined him from reading the blurb, but he was such a sweetheart and was super-hot!
Overall, let’s just say that this is one of the best fantasy books that I have read in a while. I haven’t really found many dragon books that are actually well-written and have a good story line, but I highly recommend this book!

If you like... then try...:
If you liked the Dragon Kings series I recommend reading the Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvanter. To be honest these books are not all that similar, but I just feel as though both of them were connected in some way... We for me at least.

Read the full summary the first book in the Raven Boys through this Goodreads link.

Star rating (out of 5):
This book was an amazing read and I enjoyed it so much, I must say, I am a little disappointed that it was only 120 pages long... But every single page was filled to the brim with excitement and left me wanting more. So, I give this book a rating of 4.55/5 stars!

Exclusive excerpt from the book!:

A gorgeous, humongous black dragon. Aspen’s pulse raced, and a huge smile formed on her lips. She needed her freaking camera. She didn’t dare move, afraid he would fly away.
She’d never seen a black dragon before. He moved toward her until his gigantic head was nearly above her. Twenty feet up, but still right overhead. His wings quivered, and his jaw opened, revealing teeth as long as swords. Silvery black flames erupted from his throat. The forest behind her disappeared. He didn’t set it on fire; he disintegrated it, leaving only smoking ash-covered stumps.
He closed his mouth and brought his head down. Aspen’s heart fluttered, and she took a small step backwards. Her palms began to sweat. He turned his neck so she could look straight into his eye, the sea-blue disk as large as her upper body. His lids clicked every time he blinked. His eyes were haunted, like he was carrying the weight of the world.
Aspen traced one of the scales under his eye, marveling at the feel of it on her fingertips. She inhaled. He smelled like a campfire. A sharp pain stung her ankle, almost like a snakebite, and she jerked her hand away in surprise. As she lifted her foot up and looked down, the dragon jumped. Aspen took a few steps back in an effort to stay upright. His wings opened, and he hovered for a few seconds. Then he was gone.
She’d waited years to come face-to-face with a dragon and could’ve done a thousand different things. Instead, she stood there like a dumbass. The highlight of her life and it was over in thirty seconds.
Her ankle burned. It had to be a snakebite, and she cursed herself for being the third person in the history of Yellowstone to be bit by a prairie rattler. She hobbled back to the car, knowing the snake was long gone. Surely the reptile had warned her, but she was so in love with the sight in front of her that she ignored the ground.
This would put a damper on the Hawaii trip. Aspen’s sister was going to kill her. She called at least three times a day for the last two weeks. Her parents wouldn’t be happy about this latest development either.
The only hope was that it was a dry bite with no venom. Which was possible but not probable. Considering how bad her ankle burned, she wouldn’t be that lucky.
This was the third time she’d been bit. The first had been a cottonmouth in Florida—a dry bite. The second had been a cobra, and that was just a result of stupidity. She was twelve and wanted to pet it, assuming since it was in a glass cage it wouldn’t strike. She ended up in the hospital for a week.
She peeled away her sock in search of two tiny dots. Instead, a swirl of black cover her ankle. She gasped.

An intricate inch-wide tattoo looped and swished, encircling her entire ankle. The pattern was deliberate, a marking of some kind. Where on earth had that come from? She thought for a minute of what would suddenly cause a tattoo to appear on her ankle. Unless it hadn’t suddenly appeared. Had she done something dumb the night before? She thought about the evening and couldn’t find any gaps.

Getting chosen to read and ARC is so exciting and I really loved the book!
Only bad thing is that because I read it even earlier than it's release date, now I have to wait even longer for the second book to come out!!! But alas, I loved this book and although it was quite short and found that it had the worst cliffhanger ending...
Regardless, I really LOVED this book!
Once again, thank you so much YA Bound Book Tours for organising this review and ARC! If you are a blogger and want to get you book reviewing career started I highly recommend checking them out. If you want to go directly to their website, just click on their logo on my side banner.

Until next time, keep reading!
